Hello Bible
A VS Code extension that shows one Bible verse a day in the sidebar, with favorites and customizable colors.
About the Project
Hello Bible is a Visual Studio Code extension that shows one Bible verse a day in a quiet space next to the file tree, without taking the focus away from the code. I built it as a hands-on exploration of the VS Code Extension API: webview views, view containers, QuickPick, and event-driven state.
The daily verse is picked deterministically from around 50 curated passages, resetting at midnight in the computer's own time zone, and its text is fetched live, in Portuguese, from a public API. The extension is published on the Visual Studio Marketplace.
Key features:
- An Explorer section with the daily verse, its reference, and the date
- Favorites synced live across every screen, with no reload
- A dedicated Activity Bar panel listing the favorite verses
- Eight accent colors, applied live to both screens
- A Command Palette command that shows the verse as a notification
- Colors derived from the VS Code theme, supporting light, dark, and high-contrast themes
A project that combines learning the VS Code Extension API with something worth keeping open every day.
